“I wanted to create a haven of peace,” says Paris-based artist and architect Didier Fiúza Faustino of the XYZ Lounge, a gathering space and bar inside culture and conference venue Zebrastraat. Conceived as “something between a spaceship and a cathedral,” Faustino paired materials such as marble, stucco, fabric, and wood with soft colors and sheer light. A prefabricated steel frame forms a structure that supports the walls and ceilings, while furniture includes high tables, stools, and sculptural rotomolded chairs made from polypropylene. “The challenge was to design a fluid, polyvalent, and friendly space,” Faustino explains. “Therefore, I created a central nave with a bar that becomes a long table. The rooms on each side of the nave remain empty, without any partitions or walls, and the lighting system is integrated to give the impression of a constant light, day and night, to make people feel they are in an absolute Eden.”
