As the $4 trillion wellness market continues to grow, brands are trying to define what that means for hospitality. Enter Equinox, the highly anticipated hotel from the lifestyle juggernaut. SOM, Rockwell Group, and Joyce Wang translated Equinox’s ethos into a chic, sexy concept that is transforming an industry that is still testing the wellness waters.

When luxury brand Shinola decided to expand to hospitality in its native Detroit, it looked to local architecture firm Kraemer Design Group and New York firm Gachot to conceive a modern classic. The 129-room property features a welcoming mix of materials—all inspired by relics from the past uncovered during the renovation. “It has truly become Detroit’s living room,” says Gachot cofounder Christine Gachot.

EDITION also went bicoastal this year, opening its first West Coast property in West Hollywood. Executed by iconic designer John Pawson, the dramatic and ornate design references the cultural revolutions of the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, while featuring a material palette that looks to the future.

Brought to life by project designer Aaron Rambo and owners Taylor Goodall and Mariana Barran de Goodall, the 300-year-old, five-suite Hotel Amparo in Mexico is a celebration of San Miguel de Allende’s vibrant culture. For the design, Rambo says he “imagined a crazy old aunt, married a lot of times, who traveled the globe only to return home with the things she’d acquired along the way.”
