Design firm: Concrete, Amsterdam
The details: For citizenM’s second stateside property, the European-based brand headed downtown to offer an edgier counterpart to its Times Square sister location. Rising 246 feet, the 300-room citizenM Bowery is the tallest building in the neighborhood. For longtime collaborator, Amsterdam-based firm Concrete, the unbeatable 360-degree views inspired a lush oasis for the rooftop cloudM bar. Outfitted with trees and hanging lanterns, it resembles “a park and brings more calm to the city,” says citizenM’s chief marketing officer Robin Chadha.
It wouldn’t be a citizenM without an abundance of artwork. Sixty-two familiar faces from the local community taken by photographer Christelle de Castro peek out from the façade’s windows (now installed as a collage behind self check-in kiosks). Guests then enter through the imaginative, light-filled plaza marked by a graphic red and black mural, which continues inside, and a green ivy wall displaying vases from five different artists. Down a spiral oak staircase, the sunken living room features an impressive double-height architectural bookshelf, a brand signature, “designed around the art we wanted to display,” says Chadha. Compact, neutral guestrooms feature striking artwork from the New Museum’s part-incubator, part-coworking space NEW INC. But the most surprising and innovative aspect of the hotel is in its internal stairwell. Collaborating with graffiti institution 5Pointz to create the Museum of Street Art, dubbed MoSA, 20 artists transformed the utilitarian space with bold creations that pay homage to the neighborhood. The museum will be open to guests and the public seven days a week.
