The idyllic locale of the Pacific Northwest, and specifically Portland, Oregon, is home to the recently refreshed Hyatt House Portland/Downtown. In its first collaboration with the brand, locally based firm Elk Collective reimagined the lobby and lounge spaces through a modern and regional lens, driven by a theme of “Northwest modernism,” says founder Kelly Ogden. “The Portland urban landscape is particularly rich in architectural styles and greenscapes. We were inspired by the city’s surrounding natural beauty and abundant forest lands.”
Guests are now welcomed by a sundrenched lobby, wrapped in glazing on the southwest corner of the building. Versatility is key here with a variety of seating styles and configurations spanning the space to differentiate the lounge, dining, and coworking areas from one another. A highlight includes a double-sided banquette in the dining area. Backed by a wood screen wall (crafted from locally sourced birchwood, another nod to the region), it separates the reception from the lobby bar without compromising a sense of openness.
Semi-sheer drapery recalls the misty, clouded views framed deep within Oregon forests, an image that permeates the redesigned space. Rich forest greens hues complement glazed bricks and custom rugs, while locally sourced artwork installed above the fireplace frames imagery of Oregon topography. Public workspaces are anchored by large communal marble tables teamed with stools fashioned from tree trunks.
“We wanted a lobby that felt both energized and welcoming—a neighborhood destination where locals could grab a cocktail at the bar or enjoy a game by the fire in a space that felt intimate and unique while still authentically Portland,” Ogden says.
