Built around the idea of new luxury, Pendry Hotels was the brainchild of cofounder and creative director Michael Fuerstman, who helped launch the brand in 2014 under the management of Montage Hotels & Resorts, a company founded by his father, Alan. “The way luxury was being consumed was changing,” he says. “There was an opportunity to push hospitality forward and to do so by building off our Montage brand.” However, it wasn’t until the first two Pendrys opened in 2017 in San Diego (a collaboration with ACRM Architects + Interiors, Rottet Studio, and Studio Munge) and Baltimore (from local designer Patrick Sutton) that Fuerstman saw the potential of their vision come to life. With three new properties underway, he lays the groundwork on what will make each of them special.
Pendry West Hollywood
Found at the heart of Sunset Boulevard, the 149-key hotel—the handiwork of Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects—will act as a “love letter to Los Angeles,” Fuerstman says. Slated to open next year, “the mix of contemporary glass and vibrant Art Deco will create a rich, layered, and warm vibe,” he adds. A rooftop pool and lounge, as well as a penthouse level restaurant (Wolfgang Puck will helm the hotel’s culinary outlets) are among the standout amenities, which also include a music venue, screening room, café, and basement social club with bowling lanes.
Pendry Manhattan West
Taking full advantage of the hype surrounding Manhattan’s west side due to the unveiling of the Hudson Yards mixed-use development earlier this year, the brand’s New York debut will be outfitted with Southern California and Japanese elements thanks to a design from architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and local studio Gachot. “The hotel is meant to be a breath of fresh air—a chic, clean, light-filled oasis in the middle of a bustling metropolis,” he says. Expect a warm, sophisticated ambiance with sumptuous details throughout the 164-room property when it opens in 2021.
Pendry Park City
In an effort to reimagine the classic North American ski hotel, SB Architects (handling the initial building design), architect of record IBI Group, and interior design firm SFA Design will construct a contemporary design that features glass, steel, blond wood, and a simple palette when the 150-room hotel (plus fully serviced residences) comes online in 2021. Spanning three buildings and a plaza, the ground floor will be peppered with high-end boutique shops and restaurants, while the spa and rooftop pool will offer views of the entire Canyons Village. Featuring ski-in, ski-out access, “it’s an incredible piece of architecture dropped right into the middle of the canyons,” he says. “This will set the tone for future ski resorts.”
