Positioned in the heart of Brazil’s economic capital, the Atlantic Forest in São Paulo is home to Burle Marx Park, which is named in honor of the famed Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. The popular park now doubles as the setting for the Palácio Tangará, an opulent retreat from the Oetker Collection housed within a former estate. Named for the colorful songbird Tanager of Amazonia, the property has been transformed with a nod to the natural world Marx created.

São Paulo firm Anastassiadis Arquitetos revitalized the public spaces with the same understated yet elegant color palette as the outside, developing a design scheme that celebrates Brazil. Notably, it’s the artwork that adds a spark to the interiors, including a striking gilded installation suspended above the reception desk by artist Laura Vinci and a eye-catching centerpiece in the wine cellar: Artist Pedro Petry used one single piece of wood from a pequia tree for a stunning, one-of-a-kind detail.

Renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten oversaw the hotel’s F&B concepts, including the Parque Lounge & Terrace and the moody Burle Bar, which emphasizes a chic and opulent ambiance with plush seating and dramatic art, including photographs of Brazil’s landscapes. In addition to indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the hotel’s fitness center and spa also boast their own private garden, reinforcing the outdoor environment.

Meantime, fellow local architecture and design firm Bick Simonato opted to accentuate the palatial grandeur of the historic design in guestrooms and, in particular, the exterior. The façade’s classic symmetry remained intact, and informed elements of the outdoor portion of the design. New moldings were added along with other intricate details to enhance existing arches and decorative notes. “The building sets itself apart from the green area that surrounds it, but at the same time, is a subtle addition to the local landscape, making it an urban oasis,” says Luiz Bick, co-owner of Bick Simonato with partner William Simonato.

All 141 spacious guestrooms, including 59 suites, overlook the grounds of the parkland and reflect its qualities. Spread across five floors, rooms are distinguished by four colors—beige, blue, green, and gray—that individualize each level of the building. Though “it was a great challenge working with such large and ample spaces to create rooms that would feel cozy, elegant, and intimate,” admits Simonato, the firm created private moments with black and white photographs of São Paulo landmarks.

At nearly 500 square feet, the hotel’s smallest guestroom is among the largest in the city. Flooded with natural light, suites are adorned with boiserie wallpaper—the same kind that graces the halls of the foyers. The refined but inviting atmosphere evokes a residential-style comfort of which Bick Simonato are masters thanks to a robust background in high-end residential projects. “[We] aimed to achieve the same result obtained with private clients,” says Bick, “to create cozy and delightful spaces where guests feel comfortable.”
