Designer Kelly Wearstler’s partnership with Proper Hotels and Residences and parent company Kor Group (her husband is CEO Brad Korzen) has landed her in San Francisco, this time in the iconic Flatiron Building with a restored Beaux Arts exterior. Today, the 131-room hotel is an alluring extension of Wearstler’s chic, bohemian style. “The city is our muse in everything from the palette and materials to local artists and rich European influences,” she says, all chosen to “complement the patina of the original building while infusing a touch of modern wit and comfort.” Soothing shades of lavender, blue, and salmon for handpicked vintage furnishings balance the original architecture, while abstract artwork from local artists brighten the lobby. Guestrooms favor boldness over minimalism, showcasing colorful rugs and wallcoverings inspired by European graphics for a tailored, residential feel. “Placing four patterns together in a single room was a way to modernize these classic papers,” she points out, but also a way to add depth and dimension in the rooms. Along with neighborhood restaurant Villon and the soon-to-open La Bande café, the highlight is the romantic rooftop terrace Charmaine’s, a laidback California lounge with a lush garden inspired by the natural beauty of the Viennese Secession movement.
