What was old is now new again at the SCP Redmond hotel in Oregon. Previously occupied by the New Redmond Hotel, the historic Georgian-style property, which was constructed in 1928, underwent a full architectural rehab and renovation at the hand of Portland-based design firm ELK Collective in collaboration with architect Aron Faegre. “When renovating a historically significant structure it’s always a dance between preserving and celebrating what is and adding elements that build upon the narrative to craft a new timeless story,” says ELK Collective principal Kelly Ogden. “Everything new has to make sense.”
With the goal of achieving “eco-modern minimalism” for hospitality group Soul Community Planet’s second property, the design team crafted a sustainably conscious scheme and enlisted local craftsmen and artists to align with the emerging brand’s ethos. The 49-room hotel is sheathed in a warm white base to “accentuate the interior architectural features, while maintaining a minimalist vision,” says Ogden. From there, the designers incorporated muted earth tones inspired by central Oregon. The material palette is dominated by Juniper wood, selected both as a nod to the location and as a sustainable choice. (Juniper trees are native to the region and have an out-of-control population growth that leads to erosion and the loss of biodiversity.)

During a prior renovation in the 1980s, the lobby had been enclosed in mahogany-stained wood walls and closed off from the main entry and corridor. In order to remedy the lack of flow between public spaces, the lobby was opened up and the vestibule separation removed. To restore a sense of grandeur in the space—which features 13-foot ceilings—the design team highlighted original wood beams and incorporated a monumental fireplace, comprising lava rock excavated from beneath the building when the basement and foundation were dug up.
“When embarking on a historic renovation of a hotel that hasn’t operated in nearly 20 years, there are bound to be surprises when the walls start getting opened up, and this project was no exception,” explains Ogden. “New challenges seemed to come weekly, which required our design and architecture team to think on our toes and be flexible as we waded through necessary rounds of redesign.”
