For High Rollers Luxury Lanes and Lounge at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, arguably the first bowling alley of its kind, designer John Stefanon created a luxury space with elements evoking the glamour of Las Vegas in the ’20s and ’30s coupled with 21st century cutting-edge technology.
“The overall aesthetic was to be a complete departure from the typical 1950s and 60s modern bowling alley we all grew up with,” says Stefanon, founder of JFS Design Studio in Boston, noting that he worked with the client, Big Night Entertainment Group (BNEG), on the development of other brands including Foxwoods’ Scorpion Bar. “I wanted to remain classically chic and glamorous without being trendy. It was also very important to keep the scale comfortable to balance the vast spaces we were faced with-making lounges, lanes, and rooms feel inviting, even cozy. The bowling lanes were meant to feel as if they were in your home and you were bowling right off the living room with your friends.”
The massive 35,000-square-foot bowling and event venue features two bars, 26 bowling lanes (including six VIP lanes), six pool tables, a two-level lounge with a piano, 60-inch TVs hanging throughout, and three private party rooms. Throughout, “I kept to our inspirations-romance, black tie, beautiful textures and patterns,” he says. Highlights include a 183-inch chaise lounge, black iron gates, a 50-seat marble bar, custom tufted sofas and pillows, Guiliano Bekor’s fashion images covering the walls, and ebony veneer walls adorned with porcelain magnolia flowers.
“But one thing that I do love is the Moorish inspired arch from the main hall to the main lanes. Originally thought to be the most challenging sections of the space, the arch frames quietly and elegantly brings you in to an understated elegance everyone enjoys.”
Yet the biggest challenge? “We completed the project in 13 weeks,” he says.
