For Le Pavillon des Lettres, designer Didier Benderli aptly used the letters of the alphabet as inspiration for each of the boutique hotel’s 26 guestrooms. Each letter is represented by a famous author-Shakespeare, Baudelaire, and Rousseau among them-and each room features a quote from its namesake author elegantly scrawled on the walls en Français. “The design and décor can be thought of similar to the syntax of a sentence or a story, with rhythms, chapters, pauses, acceleration, a short story being told,” says Benderli, whose Parisian firm Kerylos Intérieurs also designed sister property Pavillon de la Reine.
“The configuration of the property was quite cramped,” says Benderli of the classic Haussman townhouse in Paris’ 8th arrondissement. “So we had to be as ingenious as possible to avoid losing any of the valuable space, while ensuring consistency with our literary subject.”
Each room is designed like “a chapter of the same story,” Benderli says. “The relationship is seen in the use of colors and materials and the idea of well-being.” An earthy palette of copper, cognac, taupe, and gray is punctuated with splashes of color and rich textures of velvet and leather to create the cozy spaces.
For English translations of the author’s quotes, guests can boot up their room’s dedicated iPad, which is stocked with international bestsellers and daily newspapers, as well as jazz and classical music. And for those looking for a more tactile experience, the hotel’s cozy library (complete with an Honesty Bar) is stocked with the works of all 26 featured authors and more.
