Dutch Pavilion > When it debuts at Dubai Expo 2020, the Dutch Pavilion will serve a larger purpose as a closed-loop climate system that strives to find a way to “make sustainable buildings that offer more than they take,” says Michiel Raaphorst, architect director at V8 Architects. As the nexus of water, energy, and food, the Rotterdam firm, in collaboration with Expomobilia, Amsterdam exhibition architects Kossmann Dejong, and engineering and consultancy firm Witteveen+Bos out of the Netherlands, conceived a biotope crawling with plants that will contribute to the space’s microclimate. Enclosed behind a transparent façade, the tower will not only challenge the global perception of climate change but also offer alternative solutions to our dwindling natural resources. Ultimately, Raaphorst says, “it shows how to do more with less available space.”
