In designing the first V&A museum outside of London, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma hopes its sister location in Dundee, Scotland “will play a symbolic role in architecture for the next generation and emphasize that architecture is not something set against nature, but a being to be integrated with the landform.” Inspired by Scotland’s famed cliffs, Kuma fashioned two inverted pyramids and clad them in horizontally stacked, pre-cast concrete. The tilting masses twist and intertwine to connect at gallery floors, which will house 300 exhibits with collections from the London V&A, as well as museums and private collectors across Scotland and the globe, showcasing everything from ceramics and textiles to healthcare and video game design.
