A members club, Upstairs at the 1878, has debuted at Dublin’s indoor amphitheater 3Arena.
Commissioned by Live Nation Ireland, London-based Ellis Design Studio has reimagined a dramatic fourthin floor space within the 13,000-seat arena into an exclusive space for pre-and post-concert experiences.
The design of the club honors pioneers of Modernism and midcentury Irish abstract art, specifically paying tribute to two trailblazing women: designer Eileen Gray and contemporary artist Mainie Jellett, who was one of Ireland’s first cubist artists. The space fuses Gray’s iridescent lacquered aesthetic with Jellett’s abstract expressionist spirit.
Upon entering, members are greeted by an atmosphere of tactile luxury, where rich textures and bold colors set the stage for a heightened sensory experience.
Jellett’s cubist designs inspire the vibrant carpet patterns, while Gray’s lacquer work is reflected in striking polychromatic screens and ribbed banquette seating, which takes cues from the designer’s iconic Bibendum armchair.
Plush velvets, patterned fabrics, and translucent screens complete the venue’s glamorous, theatrical aesthetic.
