The Wilderness Bisate Reserve has emerged in the heart of Rwanda, set against the majestic backdrop of Volcanoes National Park.
Designed by Nicholas Plewman Architects + Associates with interiors by Caline Williams-Wynn of Artichoke, the intimate eight-guest retreat honors Rwandan heritage and the surrounding landscape.
Natural details of Wilderness Bisate Reserve
Inspired by the country’s traditional royal architecture, the lodge pairs modern elegance with cultural motifs.
Each villa incorporates sustainable materials—mimosa bamboo decking, volcanic rock, and woven reed mats—while large windows and private decks provide expansive views of Mount Bisoke. Inside, guests enjoy two fireplaces, an internal heating system, and a wood-fired hot tub.
Artwork by Rwandan artist Rigobert Uwiduhaye punctuates the space, alongside a palette of green, white, and black that nods to the bright, geometric shapes of traditional imigongo tiles. The villas’ botanical theme extends to intricate hand-stitched floral designs on chairs and scatter cushions.
“I drew inspiration from a variety of aspects of Rwandan lifestyle, with a particular focus on its colorful textiles and distinctive textures,” Williams-Wynn shares. “The emerald green hues and the recycled glass chandeliers in the main areas reflect the lush greenery of the rainforests and the vibrant markets that enliven the villages across Rwanda.”
Landscape design
The pathways leading to the gardens and connecting the two family villas are crafted from hand-chipped volcanic rock in homage to the area’s geological history.
Local vegetation, nurtured through reforestation efforts and the onsite tree nursery, will soon adorn the outdoor spaces as well.
Local reed matting, basketry, and pottery are showcased throughout the main areas and villas, highlighting the skills of Rwandan artisans, while the onsite Bisate Kwanda boutique and gallery offers a curated collection of these handcrafted items for purchase.
