Lodging Econometrics’ (LE) Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report for Europe indicates a development boom aligned with the continent’s economy recovery. The pipeline currently hold 1,316 projects and 205,650 guestrooms, a year-over-year (YOY) increase of 22 percent. The report also shows 636 projects and 103,736 guestrooms under construction—a 19 percent jump. Projects and guestrooms scheduled to start construction in the next 12 months jumped 45 percent, with 412 projects and 63,815 guestrooms, while projects in early planning are up 2 percent with 268 projects and 38,099 guestrooms.
The UK leads the European construction pipeline with 245 projects and 37,108 guestrooms in various stages of development. Germany (210 projects and 39,330 guestrooms), France (122 projects and 15,318 guestrooms), and Russia (87 projects and 16,653 guestrooms) round out the top four. London also holds the largest pipeline of any European city, boasting 82 projects and 14,458 guestrooms, followed by Paris with 37 projects and 6,747 guestrooms and Istanbul with 31 projects and 5,620 guestrooms. Frankfurt (28 projects and 6,133 guestrooms) and Munich (28 projects with 5,358 guestrooms) also have robust pipelines.
AccorHotels is Europe’s leading hotel company, holding a portfolio of 215 projects and 27,876 guestrooms. Marriott International follows with 187 projects and 31,977 guestrooms. Hilton Worldwide (177 projects and 27,709 guestrooms) and InterContinental Hotels Group (141 projects and 24,128 guestrooms) arrive in third and fourth place. Accor’s Ibis Styles serves as the company’s largest brand, with 50 projects and 6,437 guestrooms, while Marriott’s Moxy brand operates a pipeline of 60 projects and 10,752 guestrooms. Hilton’s Hampton Inn & Suites currently holds 69 projects and 10,456 guestrooms in its pipeline, while Holiday Inn Express from IHG includes 63 projects and 10,028 guestrooms.
