Laurie Sadove of the Pratt Institute in New York has been named the winner of the inaugural HD/West Elm Student Product Competition.
Launched in tandem with West Elm’s collection of restaurant tables for hospitality environments, the competition tasked students, and those out of school for a year, with designing a new chair or bar/counter stool to complement its Restaurant table collection targeting the hospitality industry. All designs were required to retail for no more than $199.
Sadove’s Tribeca dining chair is made with a simple wood or metal base, a modern curved backrest, and an upholstered seat. The chair will be manufactured by West Elm.
“We were struck by the exaggerated proportions of Sadove’s design,” says Paulo Kos, vice president of design at West Elm. “A perfect combination of style and versatility, it marries form with function.”
In addition, Quy Huynh of Ravensbourne University London was named a finalist with the Modernity chair and barstool, which combines metal and wood to give the illusion that the latter can be folded from one piece of laminated oak.
Sadove and Huynh will be honored at the HD Awards ceremony to be held on June 5th, 2019 at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York. Tickets available here.
