Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is planning to open the Hotel Van Zandt in Austin.
Hotel and restaurant interiors will be designed by New York-based MARKZEFF Design. The project is the firm’s first in Texas.
The hotel name is a reference to historic Texas figure Isaac Van Zandt—who once served as the Republic of Texas ambassador to the U.S.—and his third great-grandson, musician Townes Van Zandt.
Located in Austin’s Rainey Street Historic District, the hotel will feature custom décor and furnishings in a setting inspired by the local music scene, while avoiding stereotypical state details. Materials, including hand-selected items from local antiques vendors, will take inspiration from the surrounding Texas Hill Country.
Specially curated art will be on display throughout the property and include installations of birds made of vintage records and works commissioned in collaboration with the Van Zandt family, including a piece contributed to the hotel by Townes Van Zandt’s son, JT.
The hotel will house 319 rooms, 41 suites, fourth floor restaurant Geraldine’s, and 12,000 square feet of event and meeting space to accommodate up to 500 people.
The Hotel Van Zandt is slated to open late this summer.
