WATG’s London team has completed a contemporary pavilion in Andalucía, Spain’s Sotogrande community—a residential and lifestyle development that debuted more than 50 years ago.
“Sotogrande is so special in its setting that we had to create something that sat in harmony with the land and the surrounding nature, embracing the natural beauty of the site, without competing with it,” says Chin Lim, a senior associate at WATG. “Views out to the sea across the golf course were the ultimate priority. The resulting architecture and landscape design is simple, elegant, and open—the perfect response to an amazing site.”
Dubbed El Mirador, which means lookout in Spanish, the pavilion overlooks Sotogrande’s La Reserva country club, which opened in 2003. The modern structure was conceived to marry with the approximately 9,884-acre property’s landscape and features a bright design quality.
“There is total connection with the land, a clear span of view with long vistas down to the Mediterranean to the south, as well as the pine forests and outcrops of bedrock in the foothills above,” adds John Goldwyn, vice president and director of planning and landscape at WATG. “The design is the synthesis of landscape and architecture. We designed a pavilion that dissolves back into the landscape. A place where guests feel truly integrated with the local maquis vegetation.”
La Reserva will soon begin a total renovation to include rainwater lagoons, trails, nature parks, sport facilities, a golf course, and wellness pavilions.
