Caracas, Venezuela-based designer Alejandro Barrios-Carreros unveiled the design for the Sushi Garage, a traditional Japanese restaurant in Miami Beach’s Sunset Harbor neighborhood. The brainchild of restaurateurs Jonas and Alexandra Millán and their partner, chef Sunny Oh, the 4,000-square-foot, 100-seat venue is located in a former auto body and paint shop.
The restaurant pays homage to the original structure by incorporating roll-up garage doors into the design, and using giant wing nuts as chopstick holders at each place setting. Other highlights include 200 galvanized metal Alberto Cavalieri koi fish sculptures in subdued hues of green and red dangling from the ceiling, as well as handcrafted geometric tiles on the floor, and LED lights at each table. The color palette incorporates tranquil green tones that complement the fresh ginger and herbs growing throughout the restaurant.
Barrios-Carreros won a James Beard Foundation Design Award for the Sushi Garage’s sister property, Juvia, which is also helmed by Oh and was completed in 2013. Located on top of a parking garage, the restaurant serves a fusion of French, Japanese, and Peruvian cuisine.
