AMA Sushi is the latest F&B concept to open at the Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, California. The new Japanese eatery is housed across a former private bungalow transformed by AvroKO into a chic homage to the valiant female free divers of Japan.
“As guests approach the restaurant, they are transported from the shores of Montecito to the coastal villages of Japan,” says Andrew Lieberman, design director at AvroKO’s San Francisco office. “The design is intimate and bespoke, about 20 indoor seats in total, and feels as though you are dining in a seaside Japanese cottage, sharing a meal with the Ama divers as they return with their ocean treasures.”
The interior is clad with oak, a nod to Japanese woodwork complete with handcrafted joinery. Large exposed beams stretch across inky-blue plaster ceilings, rendered akin to an Ama diver’s view of the sky from the depths of the sea. Stitching and embroidery reference the unique patterns that distinguish Ama headscarves and fishermen jackets.
The sushi bar and cocktail bar anchor the space as glowing beacons carved from panels of milky pearlescent onyx encased hammered black granite. Pearl-like alabaster globes enveloped in glowing linen also compose a custom chandelier.
