Studio UNLTD has completed a new F&B concept, Bar Moruno, in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles. Crafted in homage to Spanish tapas culture and Old World bodegas, Bar Moruno was designed with a timeless warmth evocative of 20th-century sensibilities.
“We wanted there to be an air of authenticity in the art, lighting, and materials that makes the space feel like a familiar pair of jeans,” says Studio UNLTD founding principal and creative director Greg Bleier. “This needed to be a true neighborhood restaurant to work within the Silver Lake neighborhood, so we focused on making it familiar and relaxing for people. To create a space where people can feel alive, meet new people (it’s tight), and have great conversations.”
Inspired by the menu’s emphasis on Moorish traditions, shades of turmeric and paprika compose an elevated backdrop for midcentury furniture replete with rich walnut, cork, and contrasting noes of sumptuous green and oxblood. Bifolding doors open the spacious door to the streetscape, with the large bar serving as a siren to passersby. The grandiose backbar also acts the main focal point, with shelving bathed in olive green and mirrors that dramatically accentuate the bottles of spirits on display. Faux leather and wood paneling painted oxblood hues offset the aged Carrera marble countertop, which channels classic European cafés.
A low partition composed of ribbed walnut and topped with decorative mesh screens snakes across the heart of the space to expand the interior and provide a drink rail. The installation also provides privacy to the dining room area, which is distinguished by curvaceous two-person booths made of slatted walnut, tapered legs, and paprika-toned upholstery. A banquette awash in turmeric gold also wraps the length of the salon walls, which display artwork and mirrors a la classic Spanish bodegas.
