London-based Holland Harvey Architects has completed work on Cornerstone, a new English restaurant in the Hackney Wick section of East London. Designed to reflect the simple elegance of chef Tom Brown’s cuisine, the eatery features a modest aesthetic that references the neighborhood’s industrial past.
Housed within the first new building of the Hackney Wick & Fish Island Masterplan, the restaurant accentuates its raw backdrop with minimalist lighting and materiality. A subtle interplay of varying textures infuses intimacy across the space as well, while a series of found objects pay homage to Brown’s background. The functional kitchen serves as the central focal point of the interior, conceived as a singular, sculptural object. A communal feature table also anchors the dining room, crafted from 5,000-year-old bog oak salvaged in Croatia.
