London-based practice Studio Pim has unveiled its design of Javá, a recently opened rooftop eatery located along the Tagus river in Lisbon. With an emphasis on comfort and levity, the concept was crafted to embody an inclusive sense of luxury. “The brief from Pierre d’Andrimont and Margaux Marcy was clear,” says Studio Pim founder Perrine Velge. “It was to be a comfortable space with a sense of easy living where guests could enjoy beautiful dishes. A space with singularity but also sensitive to its surrounding—with Lisbon’s view and architecture as the backdrop.”
During the design process, Studio Pim retained many of the historic modernist structure’s original quirks and warts in order to accentuate the sumptuous new character of the restaurant. A double-sided bar and dining room tables overlooking the open kitchen reflect the egalitarian principles steering the design. Large rounded booths wrapped in dark blue velvet are accented with greenery, while long banquettes are adorned with bespoke fabrics to ensure each seat conveys something unique.
Little tensions—from voluptuous arches that balance out the straight lines of smooth timber paneling to ridged terracotta tiles that contrast silky smooth marble bar tops—also characterize the interior with an air of curiosity. Pervasive orange tiles complement the azure skies of Lisbon that surround Javá as well.
