Chef Sungchul Shim has unveiled his latest F&B concept, Mari, in the bustling Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan. Designed by locally based Studio Rolling, the bright-yet-intimate Korean restaurant accommodate a variety of dining experiences with counter-style seating, an open kitchen, and a cozy outdoor area.
“Mari’s interior design is new and fresh, and adds a very unique experience to the neighborhood,” says Studio Rolling founder and principal Youngmi Ham. “The goal was to create a balanced space that serves both the front of house and back of house. The main key words were airy, contemporary.”
Focal points, like the kitchen and marble chef counter, stand out in the minimalist environment. “The interior design doesn’t need to be overpowering to the guests,” Ham adds. “They will have memorable moments when the space’s design, food, and operational service are balanced together.”
The restaurant features a mix of contemporary and natural materials, including light blue ceramic tile that adorns the modern chef counter, brass, and whitewashed wood. Calacatta marble is also installed atop the bar, which is accented by brass trim and upholstered gray stools. Teal upholstery wraps seating in the dining room, which is populated white oak tables and illuminated by floral-inspired chandeliers.
