Boasting 50 seats across 2,850 square feet, Patchwork has debuted as the latest F&B concept at the Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia. For the design of the American restaurant, Brooklyn-based firm CRÈME drew inspiration from local heritage to pay homage to the city’s industrial legacy.
“We really wanted to tap into the local culture and honor the historical craft traditions of Philadelphia in an authentic and holistic way,” says CRÈME founder and principal Jun Aizaki. “The name Patchwork speaks to the interior inspiration of patterning and quilts, and references Philadelphia itself, whose various neighborhoods look almost like a patchwork quilt when viewed from above.”
Industrial finishes abound across a muted, airy palette that complements the hotel’s other public spaces. Illuminated by custom geometric black cage lights, wood anchors the materiality, adorning surfaces and serving as a focal point in the form of suspended spindles that nod to local Shaker craftsmanship. “It was important that we not only reference the city’s role as a historic lumber and industrial leader through materials and decorative objects, but also incorporate a narrative around the rich landscape and abundant natural resources of the surrounding area,” Aizaki adds. Stitched leather, concrete, and blackened steel further reflect the mainstay trades of the region as well.
