Realmuto Hospitality Group—led by Francesco Realmuto and known for L’Arte del Gelato and Filaga Pizzeria—has debuted its first sit-down venue in New York’s West Village.
Inspired by Italy’s famed Cova Milano and Gilli Firenze pasticceria, Realmuto Alta Pasticceria brings a slice of Italian hospitality to Manhattan. The all-day destination houses a bar, restaurant, pasticceria, gelateria, and café.
Inside Realmuto Alta Pasticceria
The interiors of Realmuto are “more modern, light, and airy than the usual pasticceria with very dark wood finishes,” says Deborah Mariotti, principal of Brooklyn-based and Italy-based Mariotti Studio. “We looked at Sicilian architecture examples, like Villa Igiea and the Palazzo della Zisa in Palermo. These buildings express decoration in a very subtle way.”
Traditional pasticceria elements were reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. This is apparent in the terrazzo floor, stucco walls, and wood paneling, while soft arches and simple columns guide patrons through the varying spaces.
“Our goal was to create a place where space flows continuously from one area to the other, while being able to recognize the different areas,” Mariotti says.
Evoking an Italian piazza
The space features a standing piano and a custom marble bar that nods to Art Deco architecture from New York’s Gilded Age. Despite being large in scale, the space exudes a refined-yet-cozy atmosphere with vibrant colors and soft lighting, transporting guests to a lively indoor Italian piazza with tables for standing and sitting.
“Our design team is all Italian and has cultural references rooted in our growing up in small cities where the central piazza was the heart of its citizens’ leisure time,” Mariotti adds. “So we [drew] inspiration from the traditional piazza and placed the different food experiences all around the center.”
