For the design of the 1,000-square-foot Jasper House at Black Kite Cellars, Hawkins Interiors transformed an existing wine tasting room into an elegant yet understated environment that maintains the warmth and character of the original space.
Located in Freestone, California, a region known for its coastal fog, the tasting room at the family-owned winery captures the region’s natural romance through organic materials, earthy palettes, and rustic textures.
The main room was designed to evoke the feel of a study in a world traveler’s home, with built-in bookcases that showcase a curated selection of books and treasures collected from the owners’ trips around the world.
Bluestone pavers seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, while inside, end-grain white oak flooring—with visible growth rings on each piece—runs underfoot. Timeless soapstone countertops add a refined touch.
Original rough sawn boards and battens on the walls, along with exposed wood-paneled ceilings, were preserved and refreshed with new paint. The existing structural trusses were sandblasted and sealed with a clear coat.
To round out the design, the Hawkins Interiors team added windows and doors with a modern profile.
