The Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky has inaugurated its latest chapter with the opening of the Garden & Gun Club. Inspired by lifestyle magazine Garden & Gun, the new destination cocktail bar occupies the site’s second floor, exuding intimacy that pays homage to the setting. Designed by Nashville-based Pencil & Paper Co., the space accentuates the octogenarian character of the structure with thoughtful décor and bespoke elements. “We took inspiration from the ‘sporting life’ and Southern epicurean culture,” says Pencil & Paper founder and principal Benjamin Sohr. “The place exudes a certain familiarity and warmth.”
A warm, neutral palette characterizes the Garden & Gun Club—imbuing the atmosphere with a rich patina suited to age with grace. Materials like buttery leather, honed soapstone, natural brass, and a combination of wood varieties span the space against walls adorned with a deep mossy green hue. Handpicked antiques and vintage taxidermy also serve as focal points. A custom bar lines the back wall of the interior, while bistro tables are accented with banquette seating and a comfortable lounge area that accommodates 60 guests. Sohr adds, “the layers of fixtures and finishes provide the space with a sense of history and heritage, a suitable compliment to the Garden & Gun brand.”
