Hong Kong- and London-based Joyce Wang Studio has unveiled Genso, an immersive dining and entertainment destination at Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Sha Tin Racecourse.
A new destination at Sha Tin Racecourse
Spanning two floors, Genso offers a dynamic layout envisioned as a retro fantasy land. The lower level is home to Fudo Town Food Hall, which channels the lively atmosphere of a traditional market, where guests can enjoy Japanese street food in a casual setting that evokes the iconic streetscapes of Tokyo’s Golden Gai.
Ascending to the upper level reveals Izakaya, a more refined dining floor characterized by a dramatic suspended walkway, made of neon-clad floating islands, that links intimate dining pockets overlooking the bustling arcade-style activities and live horse racing below.
It’s all in the cinematic details
The interior architecture draws inspiration from the electric neon of “Blade Runner” and the high energy of manga, with a dream-like color palette of muted teal and aqua juxtaposed with orange and peach tones. The scheme is further defined by warm timber finishes, midcentury geometric details, and patterned upholstery.
Overhead, dramatic ceilings are accentuated by rhythmic arrays of lanterns and the floating neon islands, mirroring graphic street signage. Intricate ceramic tiles wrap structural columns to resemble building façades and anchor the cityscape aesthetic.
Genso’s visual identity
To round out Genso’s bold identity, the studio collaborated with Singapore-based Foreign Policy on interior graphics and branding. This partnership resulted in bespoke wallcoverings, custom lantern shades, and specialized ceramic tile artworks that celebrate manga culture.
“Genso was imagined as a retro dreamscape, a vibrant world that invites wonder and adventure in its guests,” says Joyce Wang. “It’s a celebration of community, nostalgia, and play, and we’re so excited to share this unique experience with diners.”
