New York-based Tihany Design has unveiled the first Café Milano location outside of Washington, DC at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island. The design highlights signature aspects of the Italian concept while also adapting the space with a local atmosphere.
“The restaurant is very light and airy—large windows open to the water, curtains billow in the breeze, and contemporary boat-like sculptures commissioned by Nathan Slate Joseph take center stage in the dining room,” says designer Adam D. Tihany. “It has a laidback, breezy attitude, which reflects its location in Abu Dhabi as well as the Southern Coastal Italian cuisine.”
Two glass vitrines frame the entrance, showcasing merchandise, while a traditional Italian cart has been retrofitted as a coffee display and art piece. Large windows open up to the water welcoming coastal air. Tihany maximized the waterfront views by incorporating a neutral palette in addition to light materials and large decorative flora. Custom Italian furnishings span the restaurant in a variety of seating configurations, and oversized fans and plush furniture are featured on the outdoor terrace.
Anchoring the dining room, large boat-shaped sculptures comprise intertwined metal rods that hang from the vaulted ceiling, reminiscent of Middle Eastern dhow boats. The ceiling also features a custom light feature made of backlit fluted crystal rods, while the floor is crafted from marble chips, travertine, refined mosaic tiles, and a bronze metal inlay. Structural columns reimagined as complementary lighting fixtures infuse the space with warmth.
“There is also a very fashion-forward element to the design story, which carries over from the flagship. Michael Donnelly was commissioned to do a photo shoot in the streets of Milan to capture the essence of Italian fashion and style,” Tihany explains.
The private dining area features a striking chandelier reflected by the ceiling’s beveled mirrors. The convivial bar continues the restaurant’s coastal story with white stone and wood countertops, while the elegant wine cellar adds extra luxury.
“The restaurant embodies sophisticated, contemporary Italian hospitality infused with touches of fashion, lifestyle, and of course Italian attitude. These are the hallmarks of the décor in DC as well,” Tihany adds.
