Benjamin Moore unveils its Color of the Year 2021, several pieces of New York history change hands, and the countdown is on for the virtual HD Awards ceremony. All that and more in this week’s Five on Friday.
80,000 furniture pieces from Waldorf Astoria hit the auction block
When New York’s iconic Waldorf Astoria hotel underwent a $1 billion renovation a few years ago, Kaminski Auctions was called in to assess the value of the property’s historic furnishings. Now, 80,000 pieces are up for grabs, reports Tatler, including items from suites that notable figures such as Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Cole Porter, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor inhabited over the hotel’s storied lifetime. The auction, titled “Fine Furnishings of the Historic Waldorf Astoria New York,” will run through November 15th.
LA positions Frank Gehry’s the Grand as a hopeful development
Despite the numerous natural and economic hardships California has been facing in 2020, the delayed corporate complex known as the Grand, from legendary architect Frank Gehry, is moving forward with construction in Los Angeles’ Bunker Hill area, says Hyperallergic. Situated across from Gehry’s classic Walt Disney Concert Hall, the new build is expected to debut in 2021 thanks to a significant tax break from local officials, in hopes that the complex will assist in the area’s economic recovery.
The New York Review of Books acquires Milton Glaser’s office
Following iconic graphic designer Milton Glaser’s death in late June, the former Tammany Hall clubhouse that became his office in 1965 has been sold to literary magazine The New York Review of Books, reports The Real Deal. The 1902 townhouse in Manhattan’s Kips Bay neighborhood was originally designed by Robert L. Lyons, but became the New York Magazine offices when Glaser bought the property. Glaser, designer of the “I Love New York” logo, was involved in the sale until his passing.
Benjamin Moore names Color of the Year 2021
Even before the pandemic, Benjamin Moore’s team of trendseekers saw a movement toward staying at home. With the kitchen specifically in mind and the harsh truth of people being forced to stay at home for much of 2020, the calming, complementary Aegean Teal 2136-40 was revealed virtually this week as the company’s Color of the Year 2021. The rest of next year’s color palette, HD reports, is similarly reminiscent of textures familiar to the home environment.
