Quirk Hotel, A Destination Hotel has opened in Richmond, Virginia under the ownership of husband and wife team Ted and Katie Ukrop of locally based Quirk Hospitality.
The boutique property was repurposed from a historic, 60,000-square-foot building that debuted as the J.B. Mosby & Co. department store in 1916. Locally based architects 3north and Connecticut firm Poesis Design were commissioned to renovate and modernize the interiors while paying homage to its history and surroundings.
Though key architectural aspects were retained—such as the lobby’s segmental arches, groin vault ceiling, and ornamental ironwork staircase—new details, like a centralized lobby installation by local artist Susie Ganch, augment the 74-room property. Recalling the building’s former department store days, large glass cases act as spatial partitions in the lobby and display museum-inspired collections.

Guestrooms feature original wood floors, white-lacquered furniture, contemporary millwork, local art, 14-foot-tall ceilings, and a warm color palette of pink, gray, black, walnut brown, and white hues. Bed frames were made with walnut sourced from the original building.
The hotel’s Quirk Gallery was developed as an extension of the city’s nearby Quirk Gallery, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will relocate from its current location to occupy an adjacent building with easy hotel access this month. A small landscaped area will separate the two structures.
Amenities include 2,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a fitness center, a lobby coffee bar and restaurant, a rooftop terrace bar, and the hotel’s lobby-level Maple & Pine restaurant.
The hotel also features the Quirk Artist in Residence program, which provides a selected artist with a nearby studio and apartment for one to six months. The program either culminates with a Quirk Gallery exhibition or simply fosters the artist’s research. Available by invitation or application, the program is open to all artists—the first of whom is Leigh Suggs—a 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University MFA graduate with a textiles concentration.
