Dallas-based Merriman Anderson Architects has unveiled its design of the new AC Hotel Fort Worth Downtown in Fort Worth, Texas. Located beside Sundance Square in the city’s downtown corridor, the 16-story, 254-room hotel evokes a design narrative inspired by the aeronautical history of North Texas.
“We celebrated the aeronautical industry while also paying homage to the rich cultural history of Fort Worth,” says Gale Nall, associate principal and director of interior design at Merriman Anderson. “We wanted guests to experience a familiarity of Fort Worth design while they are inside the hotel, but also be able to recognize the modern design style of Marriott AC in an urban environment.”
The work of local artisans and craftsmen instill a sense of place throughout the interior, showcasing a materiality that includes locally sourced Texas stone, blackened steel, leather, and walnut wood. Reception desks that echo the form of an airplane are set against nearly 10-foot-tall partition screens that convey a light transparency without compromising privacy. Connected to sofas in the lounge, the fire-rated glass installations are complemented by integrated lighting on all sides.
Light fixtures on the first floor resemble cowboy hats, while lights suspended directly outside the elevators on the second floor recall the shape of wings as well. Panels adorning the face of the bar comprise various belt buckles and leather belt straps whose varying textures compose a monochromatic homage to the Lone Star State.
