The Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya is set to debut next month just north of Playa del Carmen. The resort, the Hyatt brand’s first in Mexico, sits on 590 oceanfront acres complete with mangroves and lagoons.
Costa Rican architect Ronald Zürcher has injected the property with a vibrant atmosphere that channels the natural ambiance and local culture. Long Beach, California-based DAS Concepts also drew inspiration from local scenery and incorporated Caribbean blue and jungle green hues. Textures and finishes reflect a pattern and natural rhythm while also highlighting the integration of humans and rich nature. Visitors will be welcomed into a sculptural lobby and lounge area complete with wooden walls, stone floors, and cane ceilings. Designed to frame the night sky, the lobby will be anchored by a circular water feature and oculus as a nod to the ancient limestone sinkholes called cenotes. Mayan symbolism will appear throughout the resort.
The 214 guestrooms are spread across 28 buildings inspired by more than 200 bird species found in Mayakoba. The geometry of the roofs recalls their natural forms, while muted exterior colors range from gray to white with secondary wood and stone elements that will blend with native bedrock. All 41 luxury suites will be equipped with private plunge pools.
San Francisco-based firm CCS Architecture crafted each of the resort’s four restaurants. The Casa Amate will feature Latin American fare and intimate dining spaces as well as a terrace; poolside kitchen Cocina Milagro will offer a market-to-table concept; and OllaTaco and the casual OllaCeviche will provide beachfront and poolside dining.
The tranquil, 10,000-square-foot Naum Spa will house six treatment rooms and a 24-hour fitness center. More than 14,000 square feet of meeting and event space will be offered as well, including five meeting rooms and a 6,000-square-foot ballroom. Meeting rooms are oriented around a central courtyard and include wood and stone finishes and rugs featuring Mayan textile designs.
