A former firehouse in LA constructed in 1927 has been reborn as the Arts District Firehouse Hotel. The restoration and construction of the firehouse was handled by developer Tyler Stonebreaker of Creative Space, while the interiors were crafted by Sally Breer, cofounder of design studio ETC.etera.
Behind its set of cherry-red garage doors and the words Engine Co. No. 17 neatly etched into the façade, is now a cozy and eclectic lobby space greeting the guests. Many original features have been retained like wood and concrete floors, pressed-tin panels, trussed ceilings, and niches originally built to hold statuettes of the Virgin Mary. New additions within the 90-year-old building include the Restaurant at Firehouse Hotel, a bar, coffee shop and a retail storefront.
The nine rooms are named after colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue—which are incorporated into the design, along with vintage furniture and custom light fixtures. Each room comes with its own kitchenette and toiletries by perfumer Le Labo, all featuring artisanal, glazed terracotta tiling to ensure uniformity. Furnishings and light fixtures such as the factory glass or a custom, large-scale chandelier in mint green have been sourced from an array of local artisans.
