Boston-based CBT Architects has been tapped to redesign the guestrooms and suites at the historic Chaminade Resort & Spa in Santa Cruz, California.
Nestled on 300 acres overlooking Monterey Bay, the property features 156 accommodations including 44 suites. Managed by Benchmark Resorts & Hotels, the Mission-style resort’s refurbishment is intended to inspire guests and foster creativity.
“Our new design for Chaminade is playful, authentic and memorable,” says Jacqueline McGee, CBT principal and director of CBT Hospitality. “We created a fun and interactive guestroom design with our abacus headboard that speaks across generations.”
Games are a general design concept reflected throughout, with overscaled dominoes serving as room numbers, while crossword puzzles appear in the corridors. The design is also inspired by the history and craftsmanship of Santa Cruz. Woven drums created at a local tannery serve as bedside tables; the deep red accent walls are the color of the tannery building. Other accents include blackened steel tables and oversized leather chairs.
On the walls hang old photographs of the area compiled by a local artist, and each room has a cozy nook equipped with a meditation mat. Other amenities include 12,000 square feet of meeting and event space, two restaurants, a pool, four tennis courts, an executive fitness center, scenic hiking trails surrounding the resort, and the Spa at Chaminade.
