Slated to make its highly anticipated debut in downtown Detroit this December, the Shinola Hotel has been teased in new renderings. Designed by New York-based design firm Gachot Studios and locally based practice Kraemer Design Group, the hotel will be the maiden hospitality concept from the luxury watchmaking brand and real estate firm Bedrock.
The property will span two historic Detroit landmarks: the former T.B. Rayl & Co. department store and a storefront once home to a Singer sewing machine retail space. The design will also integrate three new annexes to inject a new vivacity into the block. Inside, custom wallcoverings and flooring will be installed to best complement the original architecture, with details like marbleized wallpaper. Guests will be greeted in the lobby with an installation from local artist Margo Wolowiec, who will adorn the walls and ceilings with custom woven panels. Artwork curated by Detroit gallery Library Street Collective will also punctuate the interior.
With the private clubs of London serving as a key inspiration, the interior design will reflect both luxury and warmth with tones like caramel, camel, and gray alongside soft accents of blush and deep greens. Corridors will be crafted with cream-colored walls complemented with notes of signature Shinola blue. All 129 residential-style guestrooms will feature a range of materials like rich woods, oil-rubbed bronze, soft leather, plush mohair, and American white oak. The hotel will also accommodate 16,000 square feet of public space including retail, an event venue, a conservatory, mezzanine lounge, and a lobby restaurant.
