Henning Larsen has been named the winner of a competition to design a new 4-Star hotel in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. Poised for development in the heart of the capital, the project will play an integral role in the urban revitalization of the region. Totaling nearly 48,500 square feet, the design will introduce a grand public foyer and a broad staircase that allows the development to serve as a meeting point and pedestrian thoroughfare. In addition to a refurbishment of the existing Hotel Tórshavn, Henning Larsen will develop a new wing on an adjacent lot that will house nearly 100 guestrooms.
“We’re going back to the original idea of a grand foyer as a way to create street-level identity, and as a passageway for new connections in the city,” says Ósbjørn Jacobsen, partner and design director for Henning Larsen. “In our search for a symbol of an open, active venue for the foyer, we took inspiration from the sea caves along the Faroese coast, which are a striking feature of our geography. In a way, you could say our design represents the bedrock of the Faroe Islands, with the city life carving its way into the lower levels of the hotel.”
