Rockville, Maryland-based practice Jonathan Nehmer + Associates and HVS Design (JN+A and HVS) have completed work on the eight-month overhaul of the historic Goodwin Hotel in Hartford, Connecticut. Vacant for nearly a decade, the revitalized property, originally built in 1880, is the city’s sole boutique hotel concept.
Historic elements contrast bright whites, graphic patterns, and playful accents. The front desk greets guests with a black marble inset with a paneled black wood jewel box enclosure with brass details. A vibrant blue envelope brings vitality to the bar/lounge space, along with glowing milk glass pendants in asymmetrical styles and varied furniture configurations. More than 5,000 square feet of meeting space features white walls detailed with dramatic charcoal as well as brass and linear crystal lighting.
Several loft-style accommodations and six suites are featured among the 124 guestrooms with a design that embraces the hotel’s vintage charm with a contemporary edge. A neutral black and white palette mingles with splashes of vibrant tones, while warm mahogany floors are appointed with a blue, hexagon-patterned area rug. Original fireplaces and built-in wooden closets were worked into the modern aesthetic, while artful headboards are flanked by sconces. Oversized bathrooms are clad with spacious showers crafted with subway tile.
Onsite eatery Harlan brasserie celebrates French style with rich materials complete with inviting patterns and unexpected tones. The bar features a jade-green ceiling and a complementary graphic patterned tile floor, while cozy round booths upholstered in rich cognac leather line the windows at street level. Buttery yellow velvet banquettes on the opposite wall inject the space with warmth. White marble tabletops are paired with black bistro chairs and brass lighting, all against the backdrop of crisp white walls, white oak plank flooring, and glossy ceilings.
