Hotel Per La is the latest lifestyle property to debut in Los Angeles’ downtown corridor. Housed across a former Giannini Building originally constructed in 1922, the hotel features interiors by French architect and designer Jacques Garcia that accentuate its neoclassical grandeur.
“We set out to inject the relaxed, breezy side of LA into the middle of the city’s bustling downtown district,” says Jaqui Seerman, who served as lead designer on the project, “a botanical oasis for the entrance, a mirrored portal to the curvaceous guest check-in, and an early aughts Versace-inspired main dining room featuring ruffled white linen upholstery, curved lacquered communal table, asymmetrical powder blue chairs, and lush planting surrounds.”
Original palatial elements like Doric columns, ornate golden and blue ceilings, and marble floors wrap the interior, forming a handsome backdrop for playful new details. Atmospheric lighting illuminates contemporary furnishings and notes of vibrant color inspired by the sunny hues of the California coast. Commissioned artwork and décor sourced from Los Angeles-based artisans further instill a sense of place, beginning at the main entrance, where handmade ceramic tile wainscoting, a linen-tented ceiling, and Rovere-style fixtures accent sinewy modern furniture wrapped in plush mohair and handwoven botanical upholstery.
An arched mirror portal leads guests to the main dining room of ground floor restaurant Per L’Ora, which features relaxed slipcovered seating complemented by marble tabletops. A racetrack-shaped communal dining table boasts a punchy marigold look, while a custom bar—complete with earthy marble tones and white plasterwork adorning the face—serves as the nucleus of the space.
Inspired by a Venice coffee house, Café Ora is outfitted with luxe light fixtures and a handpainted ceiling. Rounding out the onsite F&B options is Bar Clara, a casual rooftop spot.
Each of the 241 guestrooms and suites channel Italy through a palette inspired by restored blue and gold Italianate ceilings. Custom furnishings, including antique Persian rugs, also radiate vibrant color in tandem with artwork and vintage objets d’art sourced from across the globe. A marble writing desk and settee are also featured, while European-style bathrooms are equipped with terrazzo walk-in showers and select rooms also boast freestanding pedestal bathtubs.
