Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) has completed the design of the new JW Marriott Marquis Shanghai Pudong. The fourth international JW Marriott Marquis property, the hotel stands adjacent to the city’s Huangpu River.
Guests are greeted by the impressive, double-volume lift, atrium-style lobby ascending 200 feet above, and enclosed by wall-to-wall framing that immerses visitors in a 3D relief accentuated by backlit glass panels. Conceived as a riverside garden, the nearby tea lounge offers a tranquil setting with platforms of varying heights to recall the naturally rolling landscape of the riverbank it is situated at. Warm ceramics and natural wood elements promote coziness across the interiors’ as the green carpeting echoes a verdurous lawn. Further perpetuating themes of flowing water are dual ballrooms on the first and third floors, with pre-function areas designed to reinforce the river.
Each of the hotel’s 515 guestrooms features a restrained palette anchored in beige along with rippling patterns stretching across the carpet to reinforce the influence of the nearby river. Accent tones from the marble, fabric, wood, and glass infuse a residential warmth, while all guestroom corridors are flooded with natural light to provoke the interplay of light in collaboration with water-textured wall sconces and carved, floral-patterned lattice insets on the ceiling.
