Icelandic hostel brand KEX is set to launch in the U.S. this fall with the opening of a new property in Portland, Oregon. Housed within a building first constructed in 1912, the 156-room KEX Portland hostel will reflect a sharp Nordic influence while honoring the original structure and culture.
Designer Hálfdan (Dáni) Pedersen will craft the space, building upon the philosophy that also guided his design of the first KEX location in Reykjavik. Eclectic furnishings sourced from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Egypt will inject the interior with a worldly flair. The all-day eatery, Vivian, will serve a menu that incorporates elements of Oregon and Iceland, while doubling as a modular social hub. Dóttir, the green-tiled rooftop bar, will serve Icelandic snacks and drinks.
An outdoor courtyard will also be introduced to host private events, alongside a 850-square-foot meeting and event space, and communal kitchen.
