The newly launched lifestyle brand niu by Novum has debuted in Essen, Germany. Crafted by Hamburg-based JOI-Design, the new hotel channels the region’s extensive mining history while also honoring its transformation into a colorful hub for culture and creativity.
Freeflowing public spaces unify the reception, a lounge and workspace, and a bar and restaurant. Each area is balanced with a dark, neutral palette to echo the mining motif with a buffet anchoring the hybrid space. Contemporary metal curtains, chain suspensions and hoists, and industrial-looking table frames recall Essen’s heritage. Other features include canary-shaped light fixtures that float below the ceiling as an allusion to the birds tasked with monitoring air quality within mineshafts. Lampshades and other lighting elements also perpetuate the theme with forms influenced by mining helmets and lamps.
Rooms cater to the modern savvy traveler with a large double bed, beanbag chair, wardrobe, and side table. Illuminated by suspended pendant lighting, a dark color palette joins industrial elements in guestrooms as well.
