The Memmo Príncipe Real hotel is slated to open its doors later this month in Lisbon, evoking both classic and contemporary forms that honor regional heritage.
Locally based architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho, who crafted Memmo’s previous properties in Lisbon and Sagres, Portugal, designed the 41-room new build. The four-story structure features a sleek geometry and a long, rectangular silhouette. João Corrêa Nunes and Torres de Carvalho, along with the Memmo design team infused the hotel with an eclectic style highlighting modern elements as well as classic materials.
Rounded lines and floor-to-ceiling windows define the ground floor. Limestone floors span the reception area, restaurant, bar, and terrace in a nod to traditional Portuguese masonry. Serving as the hotel’s nucleus, the Café Colonial offers panoramic views and a design influence drawn from Portugal, Brazil, Africa, and parts of Asia. The open, fluid spaces of the hotel’s additional eatery from chef Vasco Lello are clad with limestone, oak, and worn velvet. Black marble tables and green accents juxtapose the neutral atmosphere, while vintage area rugs add warmth and division to the space.
Guestrooms are outfitted with a serene, neutral palette of taupe, sage green, and wood hues sharpened by the black steelwork of the hotel exterior. Custom cabinetry, walk-in closets, headboards, and sliding partitions each feature natural oak wood. Textiles like floor-to-ceiling flax-toned curtains also complement the neutral environment.
