The Movement Hotel has debuted inside a former Amsterdam prison as the latest outpost from the refugee-focused nonprofit Movement on the Ground. Designed by Chris Burghard of locally based ÈMCÉ Interior Architecture, the pop-up hotel is staffed entirely by refugees or asylum seekers.
Housed within one of the towers of the notorious Amsterdam Bijlmerbajes prison, the Movement Hotel welcomes visitors with a colorful palette, including a salmon-pink reception area that is punctuated with modern furniture cast in an inviting red shade. All of the property’s double rooms are spread across revamped two-floor spaces within the towers. Accommodations are equipped with personal water closets, while showers are installed in communal bathrooms shared among seven other rooms at a time—a reflection of the hotel’s community-oriented principles.
