Inge Moore and her London-based Muza Lab team of Nathan Hutchins and Caitlin Miller have transformed Kanuhura Maldives into a unique island retreat. The designers drew inspiration from the bohemian gypsy lifestyle fused with modern sophistication.
“We found inspiration in the legends, culture, and natural world of the islands—their stories, colors, and sculptural forms,” Moore explains. “By bringing these influences into the experience of Kanuhura, we have created a sense of free-spirited timelessness and wellbeing where guests can escape from their normal lives and find a place to create their own special memories with family and friends.”
Black and white sarongs worn by local Boduberu performers serve as the inspiration for the monochrome palette, which contrasts with the island’s soft, natural colors. The Boduberu lounge and reception area are outfitted with new timber floors, beams, and a thatched roof. Oversized wicker armchairs and poufs also populate the space.
The kids club is dressed in vibrant colors and patterns with an encaustic tile floor, while the Kokaa Spa draws its name and palette from the local all-white butterfly.
F&B options include the colorful Deli; the Maldivian folklore-inspired eatery Dagas; the Bottega Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar; the island kitchen A Mano; and the Cowry Club, which offers 360-degree island views.
Palm House guestrooms boast undisturbed beach views and a color palette inspired by palm trees. Most of the villas are upgraded with private pools punctuated with sun loungers and outdoor dining areas. Bathrooms feature stone composite bathtubs and outdoor feature showers in the courtyard garden. Stretching out over the Indian Ocean, Shell Houses are designed in a similar fashion to the Palm Houses with larger bedrooms, spacious terraces, and a separate social library area.
One-, two-, and three-bedroom suites offer additional features. Water suites boast infinity pools stretching over the sea, while the Grand Beach and Duplex villas are clad with roomy living quarters and extended-sized pools.
