Following delays related to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the Nobu Hotel London Portman Square is now set to open November 2020. The forthcoming property draws inspiration from Japanese architectural disciplines through a minimalist, contemporary lens and incorporates a palette influenced by heritage Japanese color combinations.
Public spaces conceptualized by New York-based David Collins Studio are layered with Japanese-inspired textures like tatami mats, Buro (patchwork), and Sumi-e (mark-making). Natural materials compose an organic rhythm and uniformity in the lobby lounge and the 600-person ballroom, while a medley of warm, natural tones instills calm across the interior. Glamour abounds in the form handblown glass chandeliers, bespoke light fixtures, large-scale sculptures, and original artworks, such as a cloud pendant light suspended above the reception desk.
Crafted by Make Architects, each of the hotel’s 249 guestrooms and suites echo a distinctive character and allure separate from the rest of the hotel. Moments of bold artistic expression—from bespoke lighting to intricate joinery and wall art—will stand out against the minimalistic aesthetic, while abundant natural light will infuse a sense of calm.
