The historic Pasadena Hotel & Pool has been revitalized at the hand of New York-based architecture firm Stonehill Taylor. Originally opened in the mid-1920s, the property boasts refreshed public spaces, including its lobby, courtyard, and pool deck.
Upgrades nod to the legacy of the landmark through a Spanish colonial lens, while California Mission-style furnishings command interiors with striking upholstery. “The collection of furniture has been carefully sourced to feel like it is a mix collection from California throughout the 1920s to today,” says Marinda Thomas, interiors associate for Stonehill Taylor. “This array of furniture provides a lounge-like feel for guests, inviting groups of people to come and socialize.”
Beyond a stuccoed neoclassical exterior, vintage artwork instills a sense of history and place across the renovated hotel. Coffered ceilings were retained and original terracotta floors were restored, while walls were repainted in a moody chocolate brown hue to complement warm finishes. Terracotta and neutral tones contrast eye-catching upholstery in the lobby lounge, where mirrored panels replace a Spanish tile motif. Wallcoverings behind the fireplace and in phone booths infuse a mural-like effect as well.
Accented with lush greenery, Pasadena Hotel & Pool’s flexible courtyard—complete with a palette of pink and light blue—serves as a relaxed destination throughout the day. “The legacy of the hotel shines through at the courtyard with its architectural elements,” Thomas adds, “including archways, the flagstone flooring, and a grand, glazed urn surrounded by the original tiling.”
