Proper Hospitality is working with local developers Frank Stork, Channing Henry, and the Kor Group to open Downtown LA Proper—the first of its new Proper Hotel brand—along the Broadway thoroughfare in downtown Los Angeles.
In 2013, the developers purchased the former YWCA building—a 13-story red brick and stone masonry edifice designed by Curlett & Beelman in 1924, which opened as the historic Case Hotel in 1947 and was purchased by the YWCA in 1965. The team plans to modernize the building, though it will maintain its historic integrity. Amenities will include a restaurant, and a rooftop pool and lounge.
The Downtown LA Proper is scheduled to open in early 2017 as part of city councilmember Jose Huizar’s Bringing Back Broadway revitalization initiative, which aims to refresh the area with new retail options, F&B outlets, and hotels.
“Having invested in and developed many projects in downtown LA for more than a decade—including the Pegasus Apartments, Santa Fe Lofts, Eastern Columbia Lofts, and Barker Block Lofts—our company has been a strong believer in the vitality and importance of downtown LA,” says Brian De Lowe of the Kor Group. “With the support of Councilmember José Huizar’s Bringing Back Broadway initiative, our team recognizes the incredible impact that the collaboration of like-minded community and business leaders can have on a neighborhood. The councilmember’s efforts have created an energetic and much-needed destination for downtown LA, and we are excited to participate in its expansion.”
Proper Hotels is currently planning additional projects in Austin, Hollywood, San Francisco, and Brooklyn, New York.
