Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is expanding its Italian footprint with the launch of the Rosewood Rome. Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, the brand’s fourth Italian outpost will occupy the former headquarters of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, overlooking the iconic Via Veneto.
The hotel is scheduled to open in 2023 following a refurbishment by international design practice Jacobs in collaboration with Australian design firm BAR Studio.
Originally designed by Italian architect and urban planner Marcello Piacentini in the early 1990s, the property spans an entire city block near an array of urban attractions. The new design will honor Piacentini’s modernist legacy, while also drawing inspiration from La Dolce Vita, the 1960 comedy-drama film by Federico Fellini, to celebrate the site’s surrounding.
“This project presents a unique opportunity to interpret the iconic Via Veneto location into a layered design concept,” says Stewart Robertson, design director and principal of BAR Studio. “Our vision is to capture the rich history and romantic spirit of this location—as well as contemporary Roman sophistication—in a concept that offers effortless style and comfort.”
In addition to 157 accommodations, Rosewood Rome will be home to a trio of F&B outlets, including a lobby bar and café, a contemporary Italian bistro, and a rooftop bar and terrace. A subterranean venue housed within the bank’s original vault will serve as a modern Roman bathhouse, while the onsite spa will comprise four treatment rooms and a wellness terrace outfitted with a reflecting pool and fitness center on the roof. Three meeting spaces and a grand ballroom will be featured onsite as well.
